Texts for Sunday, May 16 – celebrating Ascension

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you – Acts 1.8

The immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. – Ephesian 1.19

Clothed with power from on high. – Luke 24.49

I’ve had a hard time finding an image of power.  What does power look like?

or

more importantly

We see a lot of different examples of power at work in our world, so what does God’s power look like?

We Christians spend too much time looking up to heaven, just look at some Ascension artwork.  We’re just like those disciples standing there staring up, up, and away.  We need some angels to ask us why?

Why do the disciples keep looking up?  Do they want that last glimpse of Jesus before he disappears?  Do they yearn for a glimpse of what awaits them?  Do they look for a different vision than what they see all around them?  Can it be more than a mere distraction?

We need some angels to remind us that up there is not our focus; it’s down here.
